Could Swimming Be the Missing Piece for Chronic Low Back Pain? Low back pain is one of the most common complaints as we get older, and for a surprising number of people it doesn't just come and go — it sticks around. Persistent low back pain, defined as pain lasting more than three months, affects roughly one in five adults between the ages of 20 and 59. When back pain flares up, the instinct for many people is to reach for a heating pad, painkillers, or book a massage. Advice to "go for a swim" has floated around for years, but until recently, there wasn't much solid science behind it.
