Myth 1: Static Stretching Before a Workout Prevents Injury

This is probably the most widely repeated stretching advice there is, and it's also one of the most outdated. Static stretching — holding a stretch in place for an extended period — done before exercise has been shown in research to temporarily reduce muscle power and strength output immediately afterward. In other words, the stretch you're doing to "warm up" can actually leave your muscles less prepared for the effort that follows, not more.

This doesn't mean stretching is bad — it means the timing and type matter enormously, which brings us to the next myth.

Myth 2: All Stretching Is the Same

There are fundamentally different types of stretching, and conflating them is where most of the confusion comes from:

Static stretching — holding a position at end-range for 15-60 seconds. Best suited for after exercise or as a separate flexibility session, not immediately before intense effort.

Myth 5: Being Flexible Means Being Less Likely to Get Injured

This one is intuitive but not well supported. The relationship between flexibility and injury prevention is far weaker than commonly assumed — some research has found no clear protective effect from general flexibility alone, and in certain contexts excessive flexibility (particularly in joints not adequately supported by strength) can actually increase injury risk rather than reduce it.

What genuinely protects against injury is a combination of adequate strength through a joint's functional range, proper warm-up, and sensible training progression — flexibility is one piece of a larger picture, not a standalone shield.

Myth 6: Stretching Immediately Cures Muscle Soreness

Stretching a sore muscle can feel temporarily relieving, but there's limited evidence that it actually speeds up the underlying recovery process behind delayed-onset muscle soreness. The relief is often more about the sensation of movement and blood flow in the moment than an actual acceleration of tissue repair. It's a genuinely pleasant recovery ritual — just not the recovery accelerant it's often marketed as.

What Actually Works: A Simple, Evidence-Aligned Approach

  • Before a workout: dynamic stretching and movement-specific warm-up, not static holds
  • After a workout, or in a separate session: static stretching, held for 15-30 seconds per position, without pushing into pain
  • Frequency: 2-4 sessions per week targeting genuinely tight areas is enough for real improvement — you don't need daily full-body sessions
  • Pair flexibility with strength, especially through end-ranges of motion, rather than treating flexibility as an isolated goal
